Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen

Echigo-Yuzawa is arguably Japan’s most accessible snow country destination — reachable from Tokyo in about 75 minutes by Shinkansen — and the legendary setting of Nobel laureate Kawabata Yasunari’s novel Snow Country.

What It Is

A mountain hot spring resort town combining onsen bathing with ski resorts, sake tasting, and literary heritage. The town is centered on Echigo-Yuzawa Station, which contains Ponshukan, a famous sake tasting hall with 100+ local brands.

Highlights

Shinkansen access, diverse ski resorts (GALA Yuzawa, Yuzawa Kogen, Ishiuchi Maruyama), and hot spring bathing in one compact area. For literary tourists, Snow Country-related sites and the Yukiguni-kan museum add cultural depth.

Best For

Winter sports enthusiasts; literary tourists; travelers wanting easy Tokyo-to-snow-country access; sake fans.

Best Season

Winter (December–March) for skiing and snow scenery. Autumn for foliage. Summer for cooler mountain temperatures.

Access

Direct Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Echigo-Yuzawa Station (~75 min). GALA Yuzawa resort has its own dedicated Shinkansen stop in winter.

Travel Tips

Ponshukan inside the station lets you try ~100 Niigata sake varieties with coin-operated tasting machines. Book accommodation well in advance during peak ski season (January–February).
