Tsunan Snow Destinations

Tsunan is a remote rural town in the Chuetsu region with some of Japan’s heaviest snowfall — and home to the Tsunan Snow Festival, famous for its spectacular fire-and-snow fireworks that illuminate the deep winter night.

What It Is

Located at altitude in the mountains between Niigata and Nagano, Tsunan sometimes exceeds 4 meters of rooftop snow. The town preserves traditional snow country life with minimal tourism development, offering an authentic and raw winter experience.

Highlights

The Tsunan Snow Festival (typically mid-February): nighttime fireworks are launched from a snow-covered field, with pyrotechnics contrasting dramatically against the dark winter sky and deep snow landscape. The atmosphere is intensely evocative and unlike major fireworks festivals.

Best For

Adventurous travelers seeking unusual winter experiences; those interested in authentic rural Japan; people who want to see truly heavy snowfall up close.

Best Season

February (Snow Festival); peak snow season is January–February.

Access

Limited public transport. From Tokamachi Station by bus or taxi (~40 min). A car is strongly recommended in winter. Road conditions can be challenging.

Travel Tips

Dress in full winter gear — temperatures drop well below freezing and snow depth can be extreme. Arrange transportation and accommodation well in advance for the Snow Festival weekend.
