The Myoko area in southern Niigata is a mountain resort zone with multiple hot spring villages, world-class powder snow, and easy access via the Hokuriku Shinkansen — one of Japan’s top combined ski-and-onsen destinations.
What It Is
Myoko encompasses several onsen villages — including Akakura, Tsubame, and Ikenotaira — each with their own character. The area receives heavy snowfall and is known for dry, light powder snow that attracts skiers and snowboarders from across Asia.
Highlights
Skiing the slopes of Akakura Onsen or Myoko Kogen, then soaking in a mountain hot spring with snow falling outside, is a quintessential Myoko experience. In summer, the mountains offer trekking, camping, and views of Myoko Volcano.
Best For
Skiers and snowboarders; outdoor enthusiasts; travelers wanting a mountain hot spring experience with easy access from Tokyo.
Best Season
Winter (December–March) for skiing and snow. Summer (July–September) for mountain trekking.
Access
Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Joetsu-Myoko Station (~1h 40min), then 20–30 min by bus or car to the onsen areas. Ski season shuttle services are available.
