Echigo-Yuzawa is the most accessible snow country destination from Tokyo — reachable in about 75 minutes by Shinkansen — and the real-world setting of Kawabata Yasunari’s Nobel Prize-winning novel Snow Country.
What It Is
A mountain resort town receiving several meters of snow each winter. It offers a concentration of ski resorts, hot springs, sake tasting, and Yukiguni (Snow Country) literary tourism within walking distance of the Shinkansen station.
Highlights
Step off the Shinkansen and you’re already in deep snow country. GALA Yuzawa ski resort is directly connected to the station. Ponshukan sake hall is inside the station building. Mountain views, heavy snowfall, and traditional inns make it a complete winter package.
Best For
Skiers and snowboarders from Tokyo; literary tourists following the Snow Country trail; first-time visitors to Japan’s snow country; couples seeking a classic ryokan winter getaway.
Best Season
December–March for skiing and snow scenery. Early February typically offers the deepest snowpack.
Access
JR Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station directly to Echigo-Yuzawa Station (~75 min). GALA Yuzawa has a dedicated Shinkansen stop (Gala-Yuzawa Station) in winter only.
Travel Tips
Ponshukan’s coin-operated sake tasting lets you try 5–10 varieties for a few hundred yen. Multiple ski areas surround the town; Yuzawa Kogen and Ishiuchi Maruyama suit intermediate skiers. Book weekend accommodation well in advance.
