Uonuma Snow Destinations

Uonuma is a valley region in central Niigata, nestled between mountain ranges, famous for producing Japan’s most prized Koshihikari rice in summer and receiving substantial snowfall in winter.

What It Is

Set in a valley surrounded by the Echigo Mountains, Uonuma’s combination of pure mountain water, mineral-rich soil, and cold winters creates both exceptional rice and excellent skiing terrain. Cities include Minami-Uonuma and Uonuma.

Highlights

Uonuma Koshihikari is the most prized rice brand in Japan — tasting it at a local restaurant, freshly cooked with local water, is a food experience worth the trip. In winter, snow-covered rice paddies and mountain backgrounds create scenic landscapes. Naeba ski resort, one of Japan’s largest, is nearby.

Best For

Food tourists seeking premium Koshihikari rice; skiers using Naeba or nearby resorts; travelers combining winter sports with culinary experience.

Best Season

Autumn (October) for new-crop Koshihikari; winter (December–March) for skiing and snow scenery.

Access

JR Joetsu Shinkansen to Urasa or Muikamachi Station (~80–90 min from Tokyo). Naeba ski resort is accessible by express bus from Echigo-Yuzawa or Tokyo.

Travel Tips

Look for restaurants proudly serving Uonuma Koshihikari — the difference from standard rice is noticeable even in a simple bowl. Naeba Dragondola (5.5 km gondola) offers excellent mountain scenery in autumn.
